Bordering the Baltic Sea, one of the best-known outdoor markets in northern Europe is full of stands selling Finnish foods, flowers and souvenirs, and fishing boats lined up in the water selling seafood directly from the boat. The Czarina's Stone with its double-headed eagle of imperial Russia was the first public monument in Helsinki. Along the square is the blue and white City Hall, the Lutheran Cathedral, the Swedish Embassy, the Supreme Court, and the Presidential Palace.

A statue of Alexander II is surrounded by the Helsinki Cathedral, the Uspenski Orthodox Cathedral, the yellow Senate building, the University of Helsinki's main building and the National Library. On the corner is the oldest stone building in Helsinki. A modern glockenspiel is heard every day at 17:49.

The Cathedral on the northern side of the Senate Square is one of the most popular tourist sights. The current main church was completed in 1852. Sculptures of the twelve apostles guard the city from the roof of the church.

The statue depicts three smiths hammering on an anvil. It was damaged in a bombing during the Continuation War in 1944. Marks can still be seen in the base of the statue, and the anvil has a hole caused by bomb shrapnel.

The Old Market Hall in Helsinki has served its customers since 1889. Merchants sell everything from cheese, fish, shellfish, vegetable, fruit and cakes to spices, coffee and tea.

Sveaborg fortress was built in the 18th century to bar Russian access to the Baltic. During the war of 1808, it fell to the Russians. In 1918, it passed into Finnish hands and was renamed Suomenlinna. The journey from the Market Square to Artillery Bay takes about 25–40 minutes. The journey from the Market Square to King’s Gate takes about 30–45 minutes. Once there, you'll want at least an hour to explore, plus 30 minutes for the museum and 25 minutes or the entertaining film.

The museum portrays the four wars Finland has fought during its independence and the story of the Finnish Defence Forces. Military artifacts include anti-aircraft guns and artillery, Soviet torpedos, and a Somali pirate boat.
Get a sense of what life was like in the Finnish navy during the wars of 1939-44. The restored submarine was one of five submarines to serve during the Winter War, WWII and the Continuation War.
The museum's collection of toys date from the 19th century, featuring hundreds of dolls, classic and historic teddy bears and other popular toys that reflect Finnish games and social history, including wartime.
East of the city is the island of Seurasaari, linked with the mainland by a footbridge. It has an open-air museum with old houses, farmsteads, a manor house, a church from Kiruna, and other timber buildings from all parts of Finland.

Olympic Stadium, with its 72-meter-high tower provides a magnificent view of the city. Finland was awarded the Olympics prior to WWII. Cancelled during the fighting, the Olympics were finally held in Helsinki in 1952.
