We decided to take a little road trip to Virginia and North Carolina in fall 1992. Our first stop was Townsend and Cades Cove, our favorite place in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Then we began a drive up the Blue Ridge Parkway. Cades Cove was more crowded than the last time we had been there and with that and the Parkway, we couldn't get to the Mount Pisgah campground in time. So we found a small RV park and pitched our tent there. It was a chilly evening, made even chillier when our cheap Wal-Mart tent collapsed in the morning.
We drove to Charlottesville to visit the University of Virginia and toured the rotunda.
We stopped to visit Colonial Williamsburg, which was pretty dead, but still interesting. Janie earned her nickname "mouse" after we saw a shop called "Christmas Mouse" with a cute mouse logo. We stopped in and bought a few ornaments and found a Christmas doll we would later buy. After that we drove to Carter's Grove and toured the historic house there.
We camped for the night in Nags Head along the beach (after buying a much better tent at Sears) and walked along the beach. Then we visited Kitty Hawk and the aviation museum there and also drove up to visit the lost colony at Roanoke.
On our way back home, we stopped by the University of North Carolina and Duke. After a long day on the road, we found a cheap motel in Charlotte for the night and then pushed on to Atlanta in the morning to visit Janie's dad.
