On a cold, snowy weekend, we made the trip to Ann Arbor with the West Suburban Water Polo travel team for a tournament at Skyline High School.
Rebecca participated in the USA Water Polo Olympic Development Program selection camp in January and was invited to play for the Midwest Zone team at the ODP Regional Tournament in North Carolina.
Neuqua Valley's season opened with a tournament at Metea Valley where Rebecca scored six goals including three against Waubonsie Valley (and her West Sub club coach). She also got a black eye for her trouble after getting struck by a follow-through from one of her club teammates.
Taking on some of the toughest teams in the state (Fenwick, Naperville North, Lincoln-Way Central and New Trier) was no fun for the Neuqua Girls Team. Rebecca struggled through the weekend as her new coach's offensive philosophy was radically different than her previous coach's.
Early in the season, the Neuqua JV coach resigned and then, over Spring Break, the head coach stepped down due to a medical issue. The boys' varsity swim coach, boys' varsity and JV water polo coach and one of Rebecca's swim coaches took turns coaching the team the rest of the season. Rebecca actually thrived under the adverse conditions and by the time Senior Night rolled around, she had scored 36 goals to lead her team.
Neuqua found itself in the sectional play-in game for the second straight year, and once again, Rebecca provided the offense for Neuqua Valley. She tallied four goals against rival Waubonsie to pace her team to a 8-6 win on way to honorable mention All-Sectional honors.
After her all-sectional performance, Rebecca was interviewed for local television and social media.
Rebecca was named All-DuPage Conference after scoring 45 goals, 25% of her team's goal scoring.
After surgery to repair a torn labrum in her throwing shoulder, Rebecca was out of the water all summer and most of fall. She returned to West Suburban and scored a goal in her first opportunity of the first game of her first tournament back. She ended the day with five goals in three games, which would have been even higher if her team hadn't overmatched the competition and resorted to passing and dumping the ball in the second half of all three games.
