Becca was interning for the summer at the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and living in a dorm at American University so before she left for the fall, we flew up to Washington, D.C. for a visit. After arriving at Reagan National, we picked up our rental car and drove to American to pick up Rebecca. We hung out with her in her room for awhile while she finished up work and J. R. did some work himself and then we went to Longhorn Steakhouse for a late lunch before checking into our hotel. Janie had a call to make so J. R. took Becca to Target so she could buy a new suitcase she had been needing but could not get at the small Target near American.
The next morning we drove to Georgetown to see the University campus, where Rebecca hopes to attend law school next year.
From there, we drove to the Mall to visit the National Museum of American History. It was a bit disconcerting to see our first computer, a Macintosh Classic, on display in a museum but we enjoyed the exhibits.
We had dinner planned at The Hamilton but changed our reservation at the last minute to an earlier time because we were done with the museum. This was an issue because they were still serving brunch for that time. But our waitress was wonderful and told us she would get us some drinks and explained their sushi happy hour and she would hold our orders until close to dinner time in a half-hour if we wanted to wait. So we did. Our drinks came and our food and it was very good. But our waitress had to leave as her shift was ending and she handed us over to a waiter who was not up to bar. We asked for water refills and he never provided them. He brought us dessert menus and then disappeared for 20 minutes before returning to the table and asking 'are you good?" We said, no, we wanted to order dessert 15 minutes ago. Our desserts took another 15 minutes and then he dropped off the check without a word. Bit of a damper to what started out as a great evening with great service.
It was a hot day the next morning as we headed to the George Washington University where we parked. We visited the campus and then took the Metro for a hot walk around the Mall. We stopped in the Museum of National History but it was very crowded so we finished our Mall tour and went to get Starbucks and Cheesecake Factory before stopping at a grocery store to buy Becca some groceries for her last week so she didn't have to get them via the Metro.
