The Citadel

Founded by Danish King Christian 4 in 1626, today, the buildings inside the Citadel are used as military barracks and offices. However, the area is open to the public and a favourite green lung for a brisk walk or jog on the ramparts.

This palace on Slotsholmen island houses the Danish Parliament, Supreme Court and Ministry of State. The Tower Room and Oval Throne Room are where foreign ambassadors are received by the Queen.

The Queen's Tapestries

The Danish business community marked Queen Margrethe II's 50th birthday by ordering a gift of 11 tapestries. The series recounts the history of Denmark, including the Viking Age, the Middle Ages, the Absolute Monarchy, the Reformation & WWII

Ruins under Christiansborg Palace

The ruins are the remains of Bishop Absalon’s wall which protected the Castle from pirates. The foundation of the Blue Tower was the biggest in the castle, where political prisoners criminals were held captive.

The Royal Stables

The baroque palace has survived several devastating fires. When the Queen hosts parties, white horses ride in front of the Gold carriage in gala harness. The harness museum features former royal carriages and Christian V’s horse and Frederik VIIs beloved horse, Pearl.

According to an ancient legend, Gefion was the goddess who ploughed the island of Zealand out of Sweden. The Swedish king Gylfe offered the goddess Gefion as much land as she was capable of ploughing within one day and one night.

The building's shiny, black facets mirror the sea and the sky. A large incision cleaves the building into two formations and gives light to the atrium inside. The glass facade is held by iron girders weighing a metric ton.

Munkeruphus is a former artist’s house, idyllically situated overlooking the Sound between Gilleleje and Dronningmølle. The listed building, which was the home and workplace of the hybrid artist Gunnar Aagaard Andersen (1919-1986), has changing exhibitions.

Sankt Laurentii Church with the brick floor is situated 2 meters below Stændertorvet. In the church ruin there is a small museum with archaeological findings from the excavation of 1998. Like the other medieval churches in Roskilde, Sankt Laurentii is made of travertine.
Saint Laurentius is closed throughout 2019. However, the museum opens up on special occasions.
