Kaua'i: Popu'i & Luau

Popu'i Beach

In the morning, the Pride of America pulled into Kaua'i, where we would be staying for two nights. With an excursion planned for the next day, we rented a car today and drove out to Popu'i Beach to spend some time in the sand and the sun. We started off with some early lunch from a local beach vendor (fried rice) and then spread out our mats on the beach for a few hours.

Luau Kalamaka

After the beach, we drove around the island for a while before returning the rental car and heading back to the ship for lunch. The evening excursion was to Luau Kalamaka, an authentic Hawai'ian luau. We had images of "Lilo & Stitch" where the sister says "who needs your fakey-fakey luau anyway" but the food was very good as was the show, which told the story of the Polynesians' migration to Hawai'i.

Dancing the Hulu

They were doing a hulu demonstration so we sent Rebecca up on stage so she could learn how to hulu.

Luau

We had a wonderful buffet dinner and then sat back to watch the luau show. Our only issue of the night was a rude family who tried to claim the table we were sitting at. NCL had assigned us to groups which decided what tables each family would sit at. We went in early to get out of the sun and sat down at one of the tables reserved for our number group and later this large group came in and tried to tell us they had the table 'reserved' (by having one person sitting at the far end of the table). We spoke to an NCL employee who told us there were no reserved tables and to enjoy our evening. The family gave us dirty looks the rest of the night. We probably would have moved if they had been nice or if they had arrived before we started eating dinner.
