Alex came down from St Andrews on the bus Thursday night and joined us for our planned Friday tour of the Highlands and Loch Ness
On the way to Loch Ness, we stopped in Glen Coe, near Ben Nevis, which is the highest mountain in the British Isles. Glen Coe is famous for the 1692 massacre where members of the Clan MacDonald were killed by British soldiers who had been welcomed into their homes after the clan had been late to pledge their allegiance to the new British King.
We arrived on the shores of Loch Ness, with Rebecca keeping a keen eye out for the appearance of "Nessie", who unfortunately for her, failed to rear her head.
The castle of Urquhart, dating back to the 13th century, sits on the shores of Loch Ness. The castle, which served as a royal home was raided on several occasions by the MacDonald clan and partially destroyed in 1692 to avoid it falling into the hands of Jacobite rebels loyal to the deposed Stuart King James II.
