We took a train from Edinburgh Waverly to Leuchars on Saturday and then caught the bus to St Andrews. After dropping off our luggage at Alex's dorm room, he took us on a tour of his adopted town and University.
As it was St Andrews Day weekend, the ruins of St Andrews castle were open to visitors for free, so we stopped in to visit the ancient castle on the North sea
After lunch, we visited the ruins of St Andrews Cathedral and the graveyards surrounding the cathedral.
Alex's girlfriend Bethany joined us in the afternoon for a concert and the annual lighting of St Andrews on a cold Scotland evening. But we were warmed by mulled wine and an enjoyable dinner after Alex and Bethany showed us some Scottish dancing.
The following day, we strolled along the beach and spent some time at the Old Course at the Royal & Ancient Golf Club in St Andrews, where golf was invented.
