Morning Glacier Approach

One of the high points of the trip to Alaska was the journey to Hubbard Glacier. This glacier is one of the few in Alaska that is still advancing and is an incredible sight. We awoke early to eat breakfast and then had some coffee and hot chocolate as we approached the glacier.

Calving

We left our warmish seats at the Cove Cafe and went to deck 10 to brave the cold and wind and spray to get a better look. J. R. found a spot along the rail to take pictures and Janie joined him a little later. The ship got incredibly close and we were able to see a lot of 'calving' up close. This is when ice breaks off the glacier into the water and is accompanied by a large bang that sounds like thunder.

Glacier from our Window

We went down to our room to warm up and watch the glacier out our window and then went back up to deck four to see it from the port side as we spun around to move away from it.

Tastings

After the glacier, it was time for lunch in Cabana's and then a little Ultimate Disney Trivia in the Crown & Fin before our afternoon Martini tasting. We started off with the "Vesper" which is the classic James Bond martini, named after his first love. This was made with three parts Beefeater Gin, and one part each Grey Goose Vodka and Lillet, an aromatised French wine. As this martini has no cream in it, it should be stirred and not shaken, despite what Mr. Bond prefers. Our next martini was a Manhattan, made with vermouth, Maker's Mark Whisky and bitters. Next we sampled a Limone Basilico, made with Absolut Citron, Bottega Limoncello with muddled lemons and basil. This was a favorite of Janie's. Fourth was a combination of Ketel One Vodka and Chambord, finally ending with a chocolate martini consisting of Absolut Vanilla, Bailey's XC, Godiva and Creme de Cacao.

Frozen Dinner

The show tonight was "Frozen: A Musical Spectacular" so we grabbed seats early expecting a larger crowd. The show was cute and followed the movie fairly well. After the show, we took in a pub quiz in the pub, once again not winning anything. Dinner tonight was back in Animator's Palate with a special Frozen menu. Our tablemates were once again absent but Rebecca rejoined us for the evening. Scallops were the favored appetizer and were very well cooked. None of the soups or salads caught anyone's attention although J. R. did pick at the baby field greens. Janie ordered the veal with crab meat, which she thought was just okay while Rebecca had the chicken. J. R. ordered the wild boar filet which was tough and totally overcooked. We went to Azure after dinner for "Majority Rules" but left before "Wonder Quest" began. We had seen that event on the Magic and it was one of those where the club host tried to get the crowd to get as rowdy as possible (and take off their clothes). We didn't know if Jo would run it the same way, but decided not to take our chances. So we went to the pub for another drink before bed.
