August was upon us as was the last day of our nine-night voyage on the Disney Wonder. But there was still some fun to be had before we said good-bye to Mickey and his gang.
We all slept in a bit today but not too late, as we had a character breakfast planned for 8AM. The food was about the same as the served on the last day and the whole thing seemed really rushed with a quick photo from each character and then on to the next. Not like the character breakfast's at Disney World.
Rebecca headed off for a day of mischief with her group while the adults started off with Doug Jones and his three bears presentation. We cut that short to head to D Lounge to watch the head pastry chef make apple strudel. We determined we might not have a table large enough in our kitchen to make a strudel the way the chef did.
The block of ice from Hubbard Glacier had been removed from its place of honor near the pool and now sat sadly in the corner near the window melting away, a sign that our fun, too, would soon be over.
We tried our hand at trivia and surprisingly came out on top again, snagging four DCL rap caps for our trouble. Then it was off to Chocolate and Liquor tasting. We'd done this one on the Magic in December and liked it so we tried it again. It was once again good chocolate and fine spirits although the host spent more time talking about chocolate and liquor history than discussing why to pair certain chocolates with certain liquors. We sampled a Tattinger champagne, a 10-year tawny port, a Malbec/Cab/Merlot blend wine called Amoureux from Lasseter winery in Sonoma along with a selection of Valrhona chocolates and a glass of Glenmorangie Signet single malt.
After a brief break, we were back in the Cadillac Lounge for Mixology. We started off with a fruity concoction of vanilla vodka, prosecco and passion fruit juice. J. R. didn't like this one but Janie thought it was okay. Next was a boulevadier, made with vermouth, Campari and bourbon, in this case Buffalo Trace. J. R. liked this one for the bourbon content but Janie did not. We got to try our hand at mixology for the next drink, a twist on a classic mojito. We muddled mint leaves and lime into rum and St. Germain elderflower liqueur and topped that off with club soda. We both agreed some ginger ale over the top would have made it better. Our fourth drink was a chocolate martini made with Patron XO, Bailey's, vanilla vodka, Disaronna and a shot of espresso. It was very good and we would have it again when we got home. Finally we poured ourselves a Cinnamon Toast, a drink we'd learned about on the Magic, which was Rumchata topped with Fireball. We'd made these many times at home but here we were shown how to pour the Fireball over a bar spoon to make a near two-layered shot.
We used winnings from the DVC seminar to pickup a couple of items we'd been eyeing at the stores. We decided to skip Disney Dreams, having seen it in December and went to the pub for Team Trivia and then 2000s Music Trivia, which we were also pretty bad at. Dinner was back in Tiana's for Mardi Gras night. They gave us beads and Sofia pointed out we didn't have to do anything special to get them. We were a little surprised she knew the traditional way to earn Mardi Gras beads, but maybe Disney explains it so no one gets the wrong idea. Rebecca tried the Boudin Sausage Fritters, which were not very good while J. R. and Janie went with the Shrimp and Grits, which were. For dinner, Janie and Rebecca chose the Sea Bass while J. R. went for the Roasted Prime Rib. Before dessert came the Mardi Gras parade and the girls all got up to dance around the restaurant before beignets were served and Rebecca capped off the trip with one more Mickey bar. We said goodbye to Michelle and her daughters and Rebecca went off for one more night with her group. We finished up with some late drinks in Cadillac Lounge and saying goodbye to Jo in Azure with Pop and 80's Flashback, both of which were done so much better here than on the Magic.
