As we were doing the walk-off program, we had an early breakfast in the buffet and then grabbed our luggage and were off the ship by 7:30, earlier than expected. Since we had done immigration in Key West, there was nothing in the terminal to do. The Avis shuttle didn't start running until at least 8 so we had time to kill and then we saw multiple shuttles from other rental car companies come by, but no Avis. Janie decided to call for an Uber to take her and Alex to the Avis facility. The shuttle arrived just as their Uber did, but there was just enough room for Thomas, Becca and J. R. so the Uber was a good call. Apparently the shuttle serviced all of the terminals in order and since Celebrity was at the end, it would have been a long wait for an open seat for five people. We arrived at the Avis office at around the same time and the office was locked. Two employees showed up a few minutes later and J. R. got in line first and we picked up our car. After some Tetris to get our bags to fit in the Jeep, we headed to South Beach. Our plan had been to hang out at the beach, then go to one of the hotels and have some lunch and relax. But the weather had turned chilly and storm clouds approached as we walked on the beach.
The rain seemed to hold off so we took a walk along the walking/running path along the beach. We were amused as we gained ground on a pair of Miami residents in their workout gear taking a leisurely stroll. Becca and Alex posed for some beach phots and then we headed back to the car.
We took off on a drive down the main road to look the Art Deco buildings. Our plan had been to do some window shopping but the weather was still ominous. J. R. found a botanical garden so we decided to head there but as soon as we got to the gardens, the skies opened up and we changed our minds. Instead we chose to go to the Frost Science Center. Unfortunately thanks to a detour, we ended up back at the cruise pier first. But eventually we found our way to the center and started with a science exhibit and then a planetarium show.
The aquarium, included in the science center admission, was our next stop.
Finally we stopped near the gift shop where Rebecca played for a few minutes on the interactive area where dinosaurs roamed with her.
Now we were hungry, so we drove out to the airport area where we knew we would have choices. We settled on Old Tom's Sports Bar in a Ramada Inn and it was an excellent choice with very good pub food. By the time we put gas in the rental car and made our way on the train to the airport, we only had an hour-and-a-half before our flight left. We said goodbye to Alex as he was in another terminal and then we checked in and sent Thomas off to his gate. All three flights left on time and we returned to our respective homes.
