Honningsvåg

The Apex pulled into the port of Honningsvåg this morning which meant it was time for our 'King Crab Safari'. We met in the theater and had to wait to be escorted to the disembarkation area where we were left to figure out where to go for excursions because there were no signs or employees directing the way. We all decided to start walking past security along the water where we eventually saw a sign. We gathered together to walk to Polaris Nordkapp where we signed waivers and donned our wetsuits before heading to the pier. The boats were running late this morning so the service offered us a free drink at lunch later in the day.

King Crab Safari

We climbed about our rib boats with some difficulty and soon were off to the spot where they kept their crab pots. This was disappointing for many of us on the boat as we had been promised a 'safari' but we went to a predetermined destination and half of us on the far side of the boat could not even see them pulling in the pots or extracting the crabs.

Camp Sarnes

The boat docked at Sarnes, a native village, where we disembarked and gathered on the pier while our guides explained crab fishing and allowed us to hold our king crab before he helped a fellow guest stab it to kill it so it could be eaten.

King Crab Lunch

We stripped off our wetsuits and headed into the tepees where we would be served lunch. They provided coffee and tea and some biscuits and chocolate before bringing us bread and mayo and our plate of king crab. They eat the crab cold, which bothered some guests. One person was particularly unhappy about having to 'work so hard for so little meat' but it did not stop him from grabbing as much crab as he could. Apparently you are supposed to eat the crab on the bread with the mayo but they did not tell us that until after most of us had eaten our bread.

Back to Town

We put our wetsuits back on, which was disorganized because the guides had moved some of them around so you had no idea which suit was yours which led to the last people not having suits in their size. J. R. only knew his because the gloves they had provided him were both right-handed and he had shoved them in a pocket. We reboarded the rib boats for a terrifying ride back to the ship as the driver decided to do donuts alongside the Apex. We walked quickly back to the office and handed in our wetsuits and then wandered a small souvenir shop before returning to the ship.

Music and Mixology

After relaxing in the room for awhile, we attended the Captain's Club Music and Mixology event in the Club where Huns from the Martini Bar made three cocktails for us while the house band played. He later admitted at the bar he was nervous and was glad to see some familiar faces in the audience.

Evening on the Apex

We headed to dinner in Blu and then decided to relax for the evening. Gen Maldonado was singing again in the theater so we went to the bar. We thought about going to the silent disco in the Club, but we were enjoying the music and conversation in the Martini Bar, so we had a couple od drinks and relaxed.
